I read somewhere that that was about the only color choices back then. Anyone else hear that?

I Photoshopped my house, and tried all 3 colors, and when I did the Red,it "popped"...........so,I am thinking that was the original color....

It's Brown now GAG! :-(

Green & Red were the most common roof colors back then. Shades of gray & brown were also available, but less common. Roofs tended to be dark in color, with the thinking being that a darker roof would help the house's roof visually appear lower. The book "Bungalow Colors: Exteriors" has a brief section about roof colors & several color exterior renderings from the period.

Many wood shingle roofs were pre-stained in the factory. When we did a complete tear-off of the roof 2 years ago I saved some of the wood shingles that retained the original greenish stain on the interior side. Ours was a mix of various greenish tones, presumably to help it look like slate & more upscale (our house is one of the plainer homes in an upscale area).

I'm trying to find a non-blended green or red three tab roof. It looks like Owens Corning has both, but I'm finding it hard to find samples or anyone who carries it (and it's only a 20 year roof). Anyone have any suggestions?

Depending on where were are on the continent (I'm in northern Canada), cedar shingles were the common roofing material at the time. Here in Alberta all homes up to the early 30's were shingled in this fashion -- they last 30-40 years. Our original brown with creme-accented 1924 bungalow had most of the cedar shingles removed, likely in the 1950's or 1960's, and replaced with green asphalt shingles (diamond pattern). These were common at that time, in addition to red. Our house is now blue (I know a no-no), the way we purchased it, but the green still works. Good luck.
