Wastebasket?

OK, so I know I can buy a Stickley wastebasket for $260. I know I can have a nice A&C-style wastebasket custom-made for about the same price. Does anybody know of a retail source for a decent-looking A&C-style wastebasket that won't cost more than several days' pay? When I say I have looked for years, I am not exaggerating.

Rick, a regular here on the boards has one that he makes that is reasonable. I bought one and really like it. He has a website here: Items for Sale
Drop him a line and see what he has. Diane |

Oh, that is so cute. It would also make a cute umbrella stand!

Thanks, Diane, but Rick answered that he is no longer doing woodworking and is in process of shutting down his site.
Anybody else have a source? |

Bummer. I guess that now makes mine a collectors item?

This is a web site that I go to from time to time. There are some copper waste baskets listed. If you have a picture of what you want, post it and I will try and help. http://www.crafthome.com/products.htm

Here is a picture of one kind:
http://lumberjocks.com/projects/5092 and here is another kind: http://www.tristansantiques.com/furniture/roycroft/rwb.JPG I like the second kind better (this one costs $3499 with no decimal point!) If I could have somebody copy that for a decent sum, I would be so happy! It's just a few pieces of wood, why should it be so hard? I'm not being sarcastic and I hope I'm not being naive. It seems to me that some enterprising furniture maker (like the kind that advertises in American Bungalow!) would fill this need because NOBODY seems to sell one! Here is the current Stickley wastebasket: http://www.stickley.com/OurProducts_Deta...on=&finish= and the site says it is NOT AVAILABLE! So you can't even get the $260 one!! |

The two look simple enough. red or white oak is less expensive then the quarter sawn oak. Here is something I did this summer. http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/mm29/jabotee/Planter/

We do not own woodworking tools or any tools to make such a thing. I suppose I could find advertise for a local person to make one, but I was hoping to find a commercial source.

I drew up a set of plans for the Roycroft basket and have the materials. I will put one together and let you decide.

I want to post an update to my thread: I now have a beautiful, custom-made solid cherry wastebasket, made at a VERY reasonable price, that I obtained by placing a request on etsy.com. Is it not fabulous?

Very nice! Also, just FYI for others looking for a Craftsman-style wastebasket, not everything has to be wood, and sometimes it's nice to have some variation in a room. Wicker and metal would be nice choices as well.

If you follow the link below, there are several nice looking copper/oak combination wastebasket's. I have not seen any of the woodwork that she sells, but the copper switchplate covers are great. They are also reasonably priced, a nice bonus.

Hey Barbara,
Love the wastebasket! How did you make a request on Etsy to get it made? Can you send me a link to the person's Etsy page that made it? Thanks in advance!

Citizenshay, go to etsy.com and register; then from the vertical menu on the left side of the page, click on "Alchemy." You can look at some other people's requests to get an idea of what to say, then click the "Add new request" button to fill out your own. You can link to non-copyrighted pictures to give an idea of what you have in mind, and tell what kind of materials you want to be used, the approximate price you want to pay, and the time frame you need your item by.
My wastebasket was made by Patrick Furlong Woodworks in Tennessee, http://www.etsy.com/shop/pfwoodworks. He doesn't currently have any items for sale, so I don't know if he's gone inactive. When I sent my letter that appeared in the Summer AB, I assured the editors that I had no affiliation either with Patrick or with etsy. I showed my wastebasket to a local furniture store that has made us a great quartersawn desk and bathroom vanity and they are considering adding this item to their inventory. (I'm in Ohio.) |
