Reality In Detail

“Beauty is all encompassing, and joy is found in unexpected places,” says Mary Pratt, a Master Roycroft Artisan who makes inventive handthrown, hand-sculpted art pottery and functional ceramics. Pratt encourages us to “take a look at reality in detail” with one-of-a-kind pieces that draw from her fascination with botanical, medical, and scientific drawings of the natural world. Her original style—which draws from both Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau—captures a moment in the life of creatures such as iguanas, frogs, snakes, and turtles. The artful work that Pratt creates in her Wisconsin studio inspires you to contemplate the natural world in a fresh way.

Light As Art: Master Metalwork
Strong geometric lines in hammered metal adorned by simple geometric roses pay homage to the Arts and Crafts era in
this modern chandelier by FMG Designs. The square design allows light to emanate from above, below, and on all sides.
Each FMG lighting fixture is custom made by Frank M. Glapa, a Roycroft Renaissance Master Artisan in Metal. Glapa uses
materials such as copper, hammered brass, nickel, silver and wood. He specializes in the Arts and Crafts and Craftsman style,
inspired by the works of C.R. Mackintosh, Greene & Greene and The Roycroft A rt Metal Shop. In addition to lighting, Glapa
crafts mailboxes, house numbers, and decorative pieces for the home. See the beauty of his work on his website.

Historically Inspired Tile: Quilt Patterns
Over the last three decades artist Diana Mausser has designed more than 1,000
historically-inspired tile patterns ranging from earthy Craftsman to vibrant Spanish-style. The collection shown here was inspired by quilt making, one of Mausser’s hobbies. “I have always loved the look of floors tiled with pattern—they enliven a part of the room that is usually more reserved,” she notes. “It’s refreshing to see that designers and architects are now
specifying interiors with floors tiled with
pattern.” Visit Native Tile’s web site
to see the beautiful collections as well as
examples of their use in both residential
and commercial projects. Native Tile’s
studio operates out of a bungalow with
a large backyard in Torrance, California,
where artisans hand press, glaze, and fire
tile using fine craftsmanship.
