This makes me happy.
We purchased our home in Jan. '11, moved in in March. New to the Craftsman scene I've been doing reseach as to when it was built and so far I've come up with 1926 (maybe earlier). I enjoy looking for clues to it's past, trying to find what's original and not. One thing that puzzled me. To the left and right of the fireplace there are doors leading to a sun porch. On each side of the fireplace is a lightswitch. One also has a receptical and turns on the light to the sunporch but the other (which I thought would do the same) does nothing. Further inspection revealed that the wires weren't connected and no juice to the wires. Seeing photos of similar homes I knew some had fireplace sconces but there was no evidence of any here. We've stripped off the old wall and discovered there were at least 3 more layers that seemed impossable to get off, so we purchased some paintable embossed wallpaper to cover over the old, hiding some of the imperfections in the old plaster walls. Tonight I decided to sand down some of the chimney area to get started on the wallpaper. I noticed a "bump" as I was sanding, about 2 to 3" in diameter, as if someone had filled a hole. This isn't unreasonable since the walls had been drilled and filled from adding insulation, but this seemed odd on the chimney. Out of curiosity I measured the distance from the edge of the chimney to the bump. I checked the opposite side and sure enough, another bump. Throwing caution to the wind I began chipping away at the area, pulling out pieces of filler and soon found some wiring. In the hole was stuffed some newspaper (dated 1945) and there was the metal box and wiring to my fireplace sconce. As I said in the subject line, this make me happy. Not only do I get a pair of sconces but also the opportunity to restore the fireplace back to it's former self.
