Bathtub refinishing cost
I just received a quote to refinish my clawfoot tub ($500) and pedestal sink ($175). Does this sound about right? We're in the Chicago suburbs, so if anyone had had this done I'd appreciate a guesstimate.
Thanks

My estimates were the same in CT. They use a product from Kott Koatings. I can't comment on the quality.

Re: Bathtub refinishing cost
We got pretty much the same quote from Perma Glaze in NW WI. I've had the sink done and it cost a bit more because it was in rough shape. I'm very happy with the result.

Check out this site for another Chicago tub restoration at houseinprogress.net. They give info about who did their tub.

How did this turn out?

I'm considering touching up a tub versus refinishing, but I'm concerned that I'm just starting a process of having to refinish every 10 years.

Re: Bathtub refinishing cost
In my experience, 10 yrs is generous. I'd expect redoing it every 5 yrs. Unless you can't live w/ your tub in its current condition, I'd personally skip the refinishing.

Re: Bathtub refinishing cost
Being a tub refinisher myself I charge slightly more than 500, For inside, out and feet I usually charge 800 to 1200. 500 is a real good price, if I were you I would ask for data and msd sheets on the material they are using, Also ask how they clean and prep the tub, most importantly is the primer, that's what makes a tub durable or not. Avoid refinishers that use wipe on primers they only last a few years at best. Most wipe on primers are only a percentage of alcohol and a very small amount of a bonding agent made of Silanes. It's not a strong primer. You want a primer that is sprayed preferably through a high volume low pressure (HVLP) unit. Don't use Kott Koatings they are awful, as well as napco, hawks, diversified coatings ALL very BAD. Miracle method is the only company that I would recommend that does use wipe on primers, they have a two part primer system that holds up well. I recommend Midwest chemicals by far the best primer in the industry. I have ran many test on single refinished ceramic tiles, such as boiling them in water for hours and Midwest chemicals finishes are the only chemicals that would last through the test. As for topcoats you're not going to get much different from company to company with the exception of some being less in solids. But it really doesn't matter without a solid primer no top coat will hold. OH also avoid iso-free resins if you want your refinish fixture to last. Also ask for pictures, references, many refinishers are quite sloppy and careless. hope this helps. =))

Re: Bathtub refinishing cost
I've done my clawfoot tubs for just a 500 dollar. I think your right about your estimation on your tubs.
