Post 1925 bathroom fixtures finish?
I am looking for info on what type of finish was used in 1925 craftsman homes. We have a bungalow in San Diego and are remodeling the bathrooms. Would like to make it as original as possible, so are going for honeycomb tile and a clawfoot/cast iron tub. My question is what finish should we get for the fixtures (tub/lights/door knobs)- polished nickel, brass, antique brass...etc. Does anyone know what was used back in 1925????

I can't say that it's what was used in 1925 but polished nickle is an appropriate finish for a bathroom. PN is a bit warmer than chrome and has a period feel to it without that "forced" period look. Brass was used as well but tends to be earlier and more Victorian.

I've used PN for my bath re-dos

I agree on the polished nickel. It looks softer than bright chrome and less Victorian than brass.

Just an fyi,... both nickel and chrome were available in 1925. Either would be correct.... though chrome was a more expensive optional plating and not as common as nickel.

Hi meier.deanna,

For your reference I am posting a picture of 1925 craftsman 1925 Craftsman bath here.

As far as your concern about the finishing, I can only say that it all depends upon the particular made of the shower. I mean, if you post some pictures then I can tell you the exact finishing material which will suit to your shower to get a perfect look. Good luck !

Another finish which was very popular around 1925 was porcelain. White porcelain fixtures were commonly called the "sanitized" look. You would have seen light fixtues, sinks, tubs, faucets, and even door knobs with the sanitized look of white porcelain. About this time, 1925, colored porcelain of green, black, lavender, or pink was becoming popular. It is not uncommon to see colored porcelain fixtures along with the same color of accent tiles in the floor, shower stall or wainscoating.
A couple shots of the white sanitized look attached. The wall sconces from a 1927 tudor bungalow
