Hello everyone,

This gas valve is located in the bedroom of my 1923 California bungalow. This room was actually added on after but I am not sure what year it was built.



This capped off gas pipe is located in the living room of the house, and there are a couple more like it in another bedroom and in the bathroom.



I'd like to find out what they could have been used for and possibly find some use for them.

A guess is that you had heaters in the rooms feed by the gas. This was before the days requiring appropriate ventilation, etc. and you had free standing heaters providing the main or supplemental heat source in the house.

In my case I had wood stoves in each bedroom evidenced by the old stove pipe holes in various chimneys. My house dates from 1912 and there was no gas service in the area at that time which may be why they went with wood over gas

We have a couple of those too, our home was built around 1915. However, ours are mounted in the ceiling in the area separating the dining room from the living room. Well actually, they are in the upper area of the woodwork separating those areas. We think, possibly they may have fed gas lamps at one time as it makes no sense that they would have been for heating that high up, now would it?

Interesting. I searched "gas lamp valve" and found a few that look exactly like mine. I'm assuming that room was added in the '30s... (I need to find out one of these days. It's been bugging me) Wouldn't that have been a little late for a gas lamp? It would be fun to connect one though!

That would be really interesting if you connect one of these on experimental basis. You know these kind of structures of late 1920s were really classic. I would like to suggest you one thing. Do not try to install & run it by yourself. Try to find out a plumber then only start your work. Do you know the connecting source for that valve ?

This type of valve, with the rings on the graduated tip were used for gas fixtures (lamps, heaters,etc.) which were movable. There would have been a flexable tube from the fixture which would slide over the nipple on the valve and on the same type of nipple on the fixture. We have even seen these nipples on the bottom of ceiling fixtures. This may or not be the same type of valve on the other capped off valves.
