We are building a bungalow with exposed rafter tails and plan on using 6" half round gutters, we came across a business on the web in Lexington Kentucky that sells bungalow gutter brackets, but they won't respond to my emails or phone calls,,,we want the U shaped bracket that goes on both sides of the tail.
Does anyone know where we can find any of these type decorative brackets.

Lucy, in historic preservation work and in new construction I have specified hangers for half-round gutters. There are a couple of different kinds but their use depends on the end condition of your rafter tail. If the rafter tail is a plumb cut, meaning straight up and down then the fascia style will work. Normally a fascia board is attached to the flat end of the rafter tail and a bracket is placed on the fascia that received the half-round gutter hanger. This bracket can be mounted directly on the end of the rafter as well but is not the intended design of the product. The fascia often covers up the rafter tail so, unless the tail face is really deep and might show some of the tail below the gutter, this is probably not what you had in mind. The other is sold by a manufacturer who advertises in the American Bungalow. I don't recall the name. Their method is a sheet metal "cup" that has a half-round bracket attached and the whole thing engages the end of the rafter tail. I believe they're available in copper and aluminum. Note: if you're putting on copper half round you must use copper or bronze brackets. In turn, if you're using aluminum gutters you must use aluminum of stainless steel brackets. Through galvanic action copper will "eat" aluminum clear through within 3 months. Again if you've got a really decorative rafter tail and you want to use that company's product it may have to be custom designed. Often what we do here in Portland, Oregon is we have a local sheet metal company make the "cup" piece and solder on or screw attach the bracket piece. The advantage of working locally when your installation is custom is that you have much more control. I have also designed a less expensive system that uses a z-shaped piece of aluminum flashing that mounts to one side of the rafter tail rather than cupping the end and mounting to both sides. This is one way to preserve a highly decorative rafter tail. You can also make the whole shootin' match out of painted, galvanized steel - cheaper and easier to bend into the half-round but probably not as long lasting as either copper or aluminum. Cruise through any of the last 10 AmBungs and see if you can find the bracket ad. Or maybe contact Jhn Brinkman directly; they've always been so helpful.

I believe you are talking about "the Bungalow Gutter Bracket Co.". You can google that and get a get the necessary links (and 73,000 more.)
There are other types of hangers for half round gutters. I have 5" half round aluminum gutters on my home and have both the fascia mount type and the bent shank type (looks like a thin piece of aluminum or steel with a loose "L" shape - fasten one end to the side of the rafter tail and the other to the half-circle gutter hanger). Additionally this type of L hanger can be attached to the roof and hangs over - here's a link http://www.guttersupply.com/p-halfround-shanks.gstml But if you are going to go with roof mounted I would recommend this type http://www.guttersupply.com/p-hanger-ha ... ival.gstml As LesAnimaux.rouz noted - when using copper you have to do everything in copper, nails, gutter, hangers etc. And make sure the joints are soldered. Some companies will tell you that there are sealants now for copper gutters so that you don't have to solder but they will not have the performance or durability. Finally, on installation the edge of the roof and drip flashing should be at least an inch over the edge of the gutter (if you go with a fascia installation you could just lap the gutter flashing over) otherwise water will not get into the gutter but fall behind it (that is why I like the second roof mounted hanger vs. the first type.) Whatever way you choose to go - post pictures, we'd all like to see it! Good Luck Dan |

I have the exact same issue on a house I'm building as the original poster of this string (Lucy). She posted last July (2011), so I'm wondering whether she got any resolution? I've done a fair amount of research and while I have found some products that would work, none are as attractive as those shown on The Bungalow Bracket Company website. Unfortunately, I get the same non-response that Lucy got when trying to contact them. Can anyone recommend a company that makes a similarly attractive product for attaching gutters to exposed rafter tails as shown on that company's website: (bungalowgutterbracket.com)?
Recommendations would be appreciated. |
