Post Do you have an American Four Square ?
Hello everyone! We are soon to be new home owners. Our offer was accepted on a 1910 brick american four square. It has many craftsman interior features including black walnut diningroom built-ins and original hexagon tiles in the foyer and bathroom. Since discovering this site we've been looking for people who also own four squares with craftsman interiors. If you're out there and would like to share pictures(ours won't be posted until we close in May) please post. Also does anyone know if there is a web site devoted to American Four Squares?

Hi! I am just moving from my American Foursquare to my bungalow! I never found a website devoted strictly to foursquares, so if you can figure out what style yours is you may just want to search for sites devoted to that style of home and go from there. I also suggest going to www.oldhousestlouis.com. They have a lot of pictures, resources... and it is interesting to see their progress on the house. There is also a virtual tour online of the Richardson Home in Dayton, though that is a neo-colonial foursquare. http://virtualtoursnw.com/TourDayton.com/Foursquare/Richardson.html

Good luck and enjoy your new home! Foursquares are wonderful. And, we'd love to see pics!

I have also been looking for a website devoted to foursquares. We own one in St. Paul and it has wonderful features, though I have not seen another one like it. It's a smaller one with about 1500 sq. ft. (not including the basement). Maybe we should think about starting our own website? I for one would love to see other foursquares and their interiors. They are unique. I'll try and get some photos and post them soon.

What unique features does your four square have? Ours has a very small solarium (spelling) and a huge foyer. It's quite large(2,800 square ft not including finished attic which would bring it to 3,500),way to big for two people, but we are hoping our out of state family and friends will visit often. The interior is craftsman with some deco features in the bathroom. I guess it has a little bit of everything we were looking for: one stained glass window in the dining room ,leaden glass in the living room, french doors to the solarium, two staircases, unpainted woodwork throughout most of the rooms (except the living room which is painted white), built-ins in the dining room, window seats, and original hexagon tiles in the foyer and bathroom. We are quite happy with it and can't wait to get in. There is a lot of work to be done, though. The kitchen is small and in great need of restoration. All the other rooms need some work ranging from stripping of woodwork to general painting.

Your idea of a web site devoted to four squares is great. Let's brain storm this matter. Like I said in my first post, we won't be able to get pictures for a while but I would love to see some of your home.

We are also in the process of buying a foursquare. It was built in 1910 and is made of rusticated cement block. It needs a lot of love so hopefully we are up to the challenge. Our house seems to be more victorian on the interior. It is about 2000 sq ft. The rooms are all nice size. Large pillars in the living room and dining room. We love it. I would be very interested in a site devoted to foursquares and would love to see some interior pictures and floorplans.
Good luck with your new house.
Erika
I would love to send along some pictures does anyone have any idea how to do that??

I'm in the process of renovating my Foursquare. I'm always searching to get some ideas for my foursquare. If anyone finds one they should post it here. I'm trying to figure out what to do with my kitchen. It's so narrow, I'd like to see what others have done with the style home that I have. You can visit my site. You should go back to the begining to see what my house used to look like. Boy I have a lot of work to do! Here it is:

Jim:
Saw your blog on the 4-square restoration. Regarding the doorknobs, Emetek makes locksets with and without the backing plate that look very similar to yours. I used Emetek in my house and I am pleased with both quality and price.

We bought a 1918 foursquare. We have not been able to move in yet, as we actually moved the house to another location and are still working on restoration. Ours is approx 1800 square feet. Definitely craftsman interior with built-ins in the dining room and a window seat on the stair landing. We have original everything in the bathroom, including hex tiles. Can't wait to move in.

I've just posted a floorplan for my kitchen. It's not set in stone. Does anyone have a similar kitchen layout? I'm curiuos to find out how you may have remodeled it.

My husband and I just bought our first home, and it is an American foursquare. It has the typical four square rooms on the lower level, with four square rooms on the upper level as well, and an unfinished attic which we plan to turn into our studio (we're both artists.) The house is brick exterior with a porch going all the way accross the front, and is on a large block limestone foundation. The house was built in 1898 and has several interesting features. The wall opening which joins the foyer and the living room is decorated with elaborate woodwork. It looks somewhat like a pipe organ! Also, there is a pocket door in between the living room and the dining room which still works perfectly. There are T-stairs which join the kitchen and the foyer. There is a side door which comes in off of the dining room, which is in the form of a sort of half-hexagon shape, sort of a like this:
\<window
|<door
/<window
And in the living room is a very elaborate fireplace with a bronze relief piece of an angel which covers the opening to the fireplace. We are so excited that the woodwork is in such good condition; none of the woodwork in the house has been painted and is in good shape. The house is 1,642 sq ft not including the attic level. I have pictures, but I'm not sure how to attatch them!

We purchased our 3,100 sf 1014 foursquare last December, haven't done much yet, but will be embarking on a "fix/replace the termite rotted wood" adventure over the next few months. The place had benn everything from a single family home to a boarding house to a halfway house to a bordello!
