Favorite thing about your Bungalow
I have never seen this question before here, so here goes. What is your favorite thing about your house? If I could narrow it down to one thing I would definitely have to say our front porch. When my wife and I bought our house I must say we got so busy working on everything else first. We finally got around to "furnishing our porch" last year. We put in a swing and some wicker furniture and other things and it is really a cool place to hang out. We can pretty much use our porch all year long here in Southern California so I guess we are spoiled. I usually am the first one to wake up in our house and I like to go downstairs and put on the coffee and then go out to the porch and read my bungalow books. Id like to hear from the rest of you on how you enjoy your homes.

Re: Favorite thing about your Bungalow
There isn't one favorite thing I have about our bungalow (built approximately 1913-1914).. I guess if I had to pick one thing it would be all our woodwork. We have beautiful dark oak woodwork all throughout the house--floor moldings, moldings around windows and door frames, several original 5 panel doors, built-in leaded glass hutch, colonnades separating the living and dining rooms, etc. The only place in the entire house where the woodwork has been painted is the bathroom on the top floor. We think it was not originally a bathroom and that someone, in years gone by, made it one. But I think we're pretty lucky to have 99% of our woodwork intact!
We also have some original light fixtures we're pretty tickled with too..

I can't narrow it down to one thing. With us, its a combination of things. I love the stained glass piano & foyer windows, along with the stained glass in the built-in bookcases next to the downstairs fireplace. Then, there's the coved ceilings in the living room & dining room I also love. All the different nooks & crannies are also appealing. But, the one thing that made me (not necessarily my husband) want this house? - the window seat in the bedroom!

My husband and I enjoy our built in breakfast nook. The seats and the table are constructed of gorgeous old growth pine. The walls in the breakfast nook are adorned by murals painted by one of the original owners. The nook also features a great bay window.

The front balcony. It's over the front porch. We are on a well-used street in San Diego, with parkways and wide sidewalks; our sudivision was built because of the streetcar that went up our street from 1913 to the late 1940's. A neighborhood group is now forming a historic district that celebrates the old streetcar line: http://www.sohosandiego.org/histdistric ... hills2.htm We sit on our Adirondack chairs and read the newspapers up there on the balcony, above the street. In 1913-14, several of the houses on our street were built with front balconies, not sleeping porches per se. I think it was so that folks could watch the streetcars go by.

The distinct rooms. All my life I've wanted a house with a living room, a dining room, etc. (and a swinging door connecting the kitchen and dining room)--probably because I grew up in a 60s split-level listening to my family bemoan the historic downtown house they had left behind for the burbs. Guess I was imprinted with the sense that "those kinds" of houses are lacking, and never really constitute "home." The swinging door in my current house was removed a long time ago (in the P.O.'s effort to make my bungalow look more 60s-suburban), but the traces of it are there and I vow it will return someday!

Well my house isn't as grand as everyone else's but at the moment my favorite room is also the room junked up right now. My front porch is right on top of the list, I haven't got it painted yet or done any of the refinishing of the floors but it has so many possibilities. Second would have to be the hardwood floors, I can't wait until we can uncover more of it.

Re: Favorite thing about your Bungalow
I know this may be hard for some to understand but....to me it's the fact that the neighborhood is established and no opportunity exists for the local building department to approve a mall or a couple hundred (or thousand) new homes. I have a deep respect for how neighborhoods were designed in the early 1900's. I have lived this nightmare first hand in Colorado - our previous small bedroom community is gone forever to be replaced with hundreds of homes and our wildlife is gone. I understand the horror families feel who thought they were settled for life only to find themselves surrounded by growth out of control.
Don't get me wrong I love the old doors, wood floors, stained glass windows, treasures found on the property but the old neighborhood is the best!

Mine is a 1917 "bungaloid". The oak and heart pine woodwork is my favorite thing, followed by the beveled leaded glass in the transom above the front window and in the front door. I love the built-in leaded glass china cabinets in the colonade arch. I love the "history" that an old house has and the quality of the workmanship when it was built.

Strange because my intent was to replace immediately after moving in, but my humungous octopus gravity furnace has grown on me. If you look closely at the thing, you can see how it once was fed by coal. I imagine former owners down in the basement on a cold MN winter night shoveling coal into the furnace to keep the house warm. In the 50s it was converted to gas and has warmed the house ever since. It makes a noise like a human coughing when it kicks in...which originally scared the bejeebers out of me....but now sounds oddly comforting. The thing has quietly survived 80+ years and will most likely outlast me.

Re: Favorite thing about your Bungalow
I think you've hit on a very important point. While we all appreciate the craftsmanship of bungalows, its the idea that we really love, and the continuity of a real neighborhood is an important part of that.

I currently live in such a place. It's nothing special, the houses are mostly simple ranch houses built in the 50's 60's and 70's, but some of my neighbors have lived there for 40 years (I've only been there 24). The lawns are neat, the trees are mature, you can take an evening stroll. There's a lot to be said for all of that.

Re: Favorite thing about your Bungalow
My favorite thing is the natural light and the view due to the many windows and glass paneled doors that are in our 1921 bungalow. Standing in the livingroom I can see outside to the West, South and and the East. In the mornings I love the sunlight that comes into the space. Wish I didn't miss it so often due to work.

WINDOWS! Our last house was 1/2 of a side by side duplex. Grand total window count:10 for a 2 story house. Now we have 37 that we've just completed washing, storms, screens and all. I'll take natural daylight any day over electric!

The American Chestnut trim in our Living Room and Dining Room that we restored is definitely the best part of our house.
