Post Color for wood blinds?
After spending some time in our new house at night, it's become evident that window treatments will be needed for pretty much every room with the exception of the kitchen and pantry. As it stands now we have no privacy whatsoever. There are 17 windows in our house that are all either 31"x64" or 33"x64". We're covering 14 of them. Right now I'm leaning towards 2" wood blinds, but here's the dilemma:

Our trim is all painted Antique White by Sherwin Williams. We plan on stripping the doors which have a dark, almost purple stain on them. I plan on leaving the rest of the woodwork painted bc I'm not sure of it's condition and we're not staying in the house long enough to make it worth it. The floors are gorgeous heart pine with clear poly on them. So here's the question - should I get the 2" blinds in an off white to match the window trim, or in a light, maybe golden oak, color to coordinate with the floors? If I go off-white, I'll probably buy the faux ones - real wood otherwise.

The cost difference doesn't matter. I just want whichever will look nicest. Thanks in advance!

Do your ceilings have exposed beams? Are they white or natural? My floors are quarter sewn oak in a natural finish. I chose to go with antique white faux blinds. I then had paint mixed to match the color of the blinds and used this paint for all the trim. I love the way it looks. BUT, my ceiling has exposed beams also painted in the same off-white. My personal opinion: If your ceiling has exposed "natural" wood, then the wood blinds would be great. BUT, if your ceiling is white or off-white, and your trim is the same, I would go with a matching color in blinds. I think the natural wood color in blinds will break up the overall beauty of the trim, windows, etc., Also, consider the dark color of the wood blinds as they will appear from the outside of your house. I like the "white" showing through my windows from the exterior. Check out this pic for a glimpse of what we did in our house.
http://home.alltel.net/dbuhler/house04.jpg
Not much of my floor shows in the pic, but you can get the idea. Let me know what you decide and how it turns out!
P.S. I found these blinds at Home Depot. I chose them because they are curved and have a "lip" on the edge that is seen when the blinds are closed. To me, this just adds to the detailed woodwork, etc. After finding these, the other wood blinds just seemed too plain!

We have no beams at all, just 10.5' white ceilings, so we'll probably match the trim as you and others have suggested. We might make an exception for the two windows in the study, where wood blinds would add a more formal look. I'd like to use period embroidered curtains in the dining room (and possibly elsewhere), but we're still negotiating that.

I'm not sure that I 100% agree that using wood blinds against white trim makes it appear formal. I have 13 double hung windows upstairs in my house and I've install 2" wood blinds in all of the windows (in phases). I have a mix of rooms where I have striped the trim down and restored the original stained finish and I have rooms where I have painted trim (generally white). I like the look of both combinations. On the windows that have white trim, I find that the wood blinds contrast the white nicely and the wood complements the wood floor tones. On the windows that are stained, the more uniform look goes well with the other wood and the wood floor. Here's a picture of the wood blinds in my bathroom that has white trim.

Image

I've specified the 1" cloth tape on all the blinds to give it more of an vintage look. In the picture above I choose black tape to match the black accent tiles.

Personally (this is just a personal taste thing and everyone's tastes are different) the white on white color reminds me too much of the mass produced generic 1" blinds in white that you see everywhere.

Diane

I stand corrected! The wood blinds give the room a "warmer" appearance! I like the way they look in your bathroom. I guess it's just a matter of personal taste. And, I know what you mean about the "look" of common aluminum blinds. However, the 2" white/off-white wood or faux wood blinds have a more "refined(?)" look to them than the standard 1" blinds. Also, I really felt that the 2" blinds were a "must" with these 72Inch L windows.!!:)

How quickly things change. Now it appears we're going with wood after all, because the off-white faux blinds are TWICE as much as the white and almost $10 more than the wood. I like the way yours look Diane.

I love your bathroom Dianne! I agree with StevenA - I think we'll go with wood afterall... The wood just warms up the room so nicely! I was worried that all white trim, plus white blinds, plus white-ish ceilings would look too cold and antiseptic - very hospital like. I can't wait to get started! Thanks for your help.
